Makkum

The town of Makkum is located in the southwestern part of Friesland. It is a village known since ancient times for its pottery and its location on the coast of the IJsselmeer. In the Middle Ages, Makkum was nicknamed "Gateway to the Zuiderzee", and owes this name to the monastic order at the time that had installed locks that gave access to the Wadden Sea. The Amels shipyard has been a defining feature of Makkum since the second half of the 20th century and was taken over by Royal De Vries Shipbuilding in 2005. In Makkum there are several houses with a floor under a gable roof, equipped with a front shield and above it the top chimney, called "Gleiershuizen". At the front of the houses, 4 sidewalk posts have been placed that are connected to each other by a chain. The houses also have a cornice with a neo-empire carving
